How can an author put the book online when the publisher owns the rights?
"You will only be putting up an extract of your book (for readers to sample), not the whole book. This will allow potential readers to discover and "taste" your book. You are in total control of the pages (and the number of pages) that you want displayed. Of course, you can and should inform your publishers about this, just to keep them in the loop. As you know, extracts are a critical part of the book marketing effort and publishers are aware of this, and hence typically have no objections. Further, the easy sharing option in BookBuzzr allows you to promote your book on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace." What is the difference between fReado and BookBuzzr? fReado is the site that hosts books maintained in the BookBuzzr format. It includes author profiles, book details and opportunities for interaction among book-lovers. BookBuzzr, is the technology that allows the distribution of your book on your blog or website. Do the fReado Terms of Service require me to give away my copyright on the documents I upload to fReado? No. Under U.S. law, every written work is covered by a copyright. You own the copyright to a work by creating the work or otherwise acquiring the copyright to the work from the creator of the work. When you sign up for a fReado account, you agree to adhere to the fReado Terms of Service. In order to upload a work onto fReado in compliance with the Terms of Service, you must either (i) own the copyright to the work you are uploading or (ii) have authority from the copyright owner to upload the work and grant a license to fReado to include that work on the fReado service. The Terms of Service further state that when you upload a work to fReado, you grant to fReado a license to use and distribute your uploaded content. This eliminates any doubt that fReado's use and distribution of your content through the fReado service does not infringe your, or anyone else's, copyright. This is only a license -- you (or the person who authorized you to upload the content) still hold the copyright to the content you upload. You can revoke fReado's license to use the content you upload by removing your content from fReado. How much of my book should I give away online for free? It depends. A few authors such as Cory Doctorow (http://craphound.com/) have given away their entire books for free and claim that this has actually promoted sales of their physical books. There is probably a case for this since the universe of people who read online and the universe of people who prefer to read physical books are entirely different and the online readers help evangelize your book to the non-digital readers. For most authors working within the confines of their publishing contracts, the below-mentioned quote from Morris Rosenthal (http://www.fonerbooks.com/market.htm) would be instructive: "I had the full draft of my Print on Demand book "Start Your Own Computer Business: The Unembellished Guide" online for a year before I published the book. Sales were pretty sluggish from the start, but I was prepared to ignore it until readers started e-mailing me saying, "I've read the online version. Great book! Am I missing out if I don't buy the published version?" I answered honestly that aside from some editing, proof reading and illustrations, they'd pretty much read the whole thing. Finally, one guy wrote throwing a line from my own book back at me, paraphrased, "Are you running a publishing company or a money losing hobby?" At that point, I took all but the first three chapters of the book offline, and sales immediately jumped by 200%." What format do you want excerpts for fReado? The required format is PDF format. I don't have a PDF version of my book. What are my options? No problem. You can go to a site such as Zamzar (www.zamzar.com) which supports free, online file conversion and convert from any format to PDF. Please note that Zamzar is not affiliated with fReado in any way. But we've used the service and it's quite useful. Is it difficult for an author to set up a BookBuzzr widget? Putting up your book into BookBuzzr format is quite simple. If you know how to share your videos and photos on Facebook or MySpace you know how to use BookBuzzr. If I upload the entire book, is it secure that only x amount of pages could be downloaded? Yes. After uploading the book, you can define which pages can be shown. You can even define pages that are not continuous. For example, you can ask that pages 1 to 10 and pages 30 to 70 be shown. You can change the pages being displayed at any time. Further, talking about security, people who look at your book cannot copy the pages of your book as the book pages are converted into individual images and streamed like a YouTube video. How do I give buy links to let people know where they can buy my book? After uploading your book, you will be asked to provide information about your book. One of the fields here asks you to provide information about where you can buy the book. Add your buy links here along with name of store and price of book so your readers will have a number of options to choose from. How many authors are using fReado? You can enable the flash player in the browser using the "Manage Add-ons" option in "Tools" Menu. If flash player is not installed in your computer you can get it from www.adobe.com/flashplayer. Can you guarantee that if I supply DRM free, the books will not be able to be copied by others? We cannot guarantee that it cannot be copied by others. A determined hacker can break most systems that are considered secure. Hence, we do not want to make any such express commitments. However, please be advised that BookBuzzr streams images and does not store images on the accessing computer. This means that a reader CANNOT copy the pages easily. I already have my book on Google Books. Isn't this sufficient to market my book online? Here are some reasons why Google Books alone is not sufficient to market your book and why BookBuzzr is an outstanding complement to Google Books.
Also, the BookBuzzr paradigm /perspective is completely different from Google Books. We think of ourselves primarily as book-marketing technology for authors. As such we're not constrained by any technology or platform. If Twitter is important today, we'll incorporate Twitter features. If a new technology comes along we'll add that into our technology. For example, in the next few months we're working on features that integrate with Amazon. Google Books probably thinks of itself more as a place where people can discover and read books (the main benefit for authors being getting found via search). I am a publisher, I cannot find anything to click to get information about adding books in fReado? In order to upload books please do the following.
