I'm a new mom and my hubby gave me a week off to visit my sister in New York. I bought the print copy of this book at McNally Jackson bookstore in Soho. I went back and bought one for my younger cousin who's a fashion blogger and student. We love it! We visited about 6 of the cafes in the guide. I ventured to Brooklyn based on her suggestions. This was the best travel guide, I felt like a real New Yorker hanging out with artistic types and writing in cafe windows as I sipped my yummy espresso. That's another thing the places have great food specials too! I didn't have to run to Panera to eat and then back to work. My dear sister ended up stealing my copy (she says I must have forgotten it) but I'm going to just download the e-book or order another one. I think there might be one for Boston soon! Oh and I saw that she wrote her novel while visiting the cafes so I downloaded it. That was a good read too =)

Insider guides can often be a mixed bag, leaving out useful details or including places that don't fit the guide's theme just to mention an old favorite of the author. Writer's Retreat avoids these pitfalls by presenting a focused, well presented guide with features and insights beyond normal expectations.

The cafes and coffee shops readers are directed to are a nice collection of hidden gems and more commonly known hotspots. The key is that in addition to location, the author includes peak hour information for each place and suggestions as to the best time to avoid crowds. The value of this information can't be understated in a city like New York. The guide is divided into geographic sections, making it easy to find recommendations based on what area you'll be in on a given day.

Beyond that the author gives us some etiquette advice (most of which should be common sense but it's presented quickly and covers points important enough to warrant a reminder) and a fantastic section at the end of "Inspiration Itineraries": suggested museums, parks, etc (again arranged by geographic areas) to wander and explore.

Overall a great list of recommendations from someone who's found a lot to share, and an easy recommendation for both those new to NYC and old hands looking for new ideas.
