Description

Enter into the world of 16 year-old Rue Volley...who, up until one fateful night, thought she was "normal" or as "normal" as she could be.

But "normal" does not include being a vampire...a truth about herself that she will soon discover.

Rue Volley lives in the quiet little town of Calvary, Minnesota...nestled in the thick woods lining the Great Lakes. Rue, along with her  brother Kai, have lived an otherwise calm life up until their Mother was commited into Rolling River Asylum, after she mysteriously stopped speaking to anyone. Rue is convinced by her brother to attend a party on her birthday, and after she experiences something that she cannot explain, she and everyone in her world is thrown into madness. Join Rue on this epic journey, 6 books in all, as she struggles with grief, love, humor, old crushes, newfound infatuations, hot boys, AND vampires, lots and lots of them.

This first book in the series starts you on a journey that you will find hard to ignore and once you start reading you will be hooked...or perhaps bitten.

OK, a couple disclosures first:
A: I know the Author, she's a friend on FaceBook. And I don't friend people that I wouldn't actually want to hang out with, so my opinion might be biased.

B: This is offset by the fact that I'm not, in general, a huge fan of the Vampire genre. My idea of the basic vampire story: Boy meets girl, boy bites girl, boy and girl have stakes driven through their hearts. The end! That said...

I picked up the first installment of the Blood and Light series, entitled "Blood and Light". I was enthralled. The main character, Rue Volley (yes, named and patterned after the author). A 17 year old girl going through the normal issues of raging hormones, boys, school, & etc. Unfortunately, on top of that she's going through the changes that a Vampire goes through, which happen at a certain time of life, and has a whole other set if issues that go with it. She has on human and several new Vampire friends helping her through this. And the characters are all well written, and multi-dimensional, like real people are.

I mentioned my thoughts on the basic Vampire story plot above. Not so with Rue's books! There is actually a whole civilization of Vampires, with their own city and the whole nine yards. They also have, in addition to the usual extraordinary strength, many other perceptions as well. All that said, humans for once (and in a nod to reality) don't stand a chance against these guys. A lot of these books have to do with a civil war in their society and Rue's place in it.

If you're expecting nice, smooth read with predictable outcomes and an nicely wrapped up ending, forget about it. This is more like a literary roller-coaster ride. And the end of the first book (in fact, all three) is a cliffhanger of epic proportions. In fact, if you like "Blood and Light", then I would suggest ordering "Smoke and Mirrors", the second book, immediately so you're not tortured while waiting for it to arrive.

All in all, I LOVE these books. I've been reading them every chance I have. The third book ends in a cliffhanger that is even more epic than the one in the first book! There are 6 books I all, all fully written, but only 3 have been published. I highly recommend this series. It's part vampire story, love story (but NOT sappy), action & even SciFi all rolled into one.

Thanks for taking the time or read this, and I hope you enjoy these books as much as I have!

In the case of Blood & Light I can say it definitely left an impression. As a Therapist I can appreciate the motivation behind the writing of the story. Rue provides a touching insight to this motivation at the beginning of the book before the story that is sure to bring a tear to the eye of anyone who has ever lost a family member (ok so that was a SLIGHT spoiler). Throughout the book you cant help but feel the emotions the author was feeling as she wrote (then again maybe thats the Therapist in me...lol).

The story itself is snarky, fun, and of course sexy (just how I like it). It also has some sembelance of reality (yeah I know, for Vampires right? I live in New Orleans....VAMPIRES EXIST!). Unreseloved family issues and emotional hangups run rampant and its so nice to see something that can be remotely REAL versus the typical teenage "I - love- you- so -much- I- will- die -without -you,- bite- me- so - that - i - can - live- forever - and - we - can - be- together- forever- not - quite - a - threesome - love - triangle." I have only read book one thus far and can say that it is indeed refreshing, unique, and a much needed take in this age of Stephanie Meyers. Well done Rue Volley!

The downside of Blood & Light? (You know I always have to give one no matter how much I love a book because I have to be fair). The downside is the length. Granted its all in personal preference and has nothing to do with the writer or the story itself. Blood and Light is roughly 700 pages (ebook edition, not sure the exact number in print). This is pretty lengthy for a series opener. Again, a non writer person may not care about this and truthfully had I not been doing a review and were only reading in my lesiurely time I probably wouldnt care either. I just felt like such a loser because it took me forever to make a dent (whatever call me an over-achiever...lol).

All in all Blood & Light is well worth the buy and is the start to what I presume to be a great series from Rue Volley and that's not just

"SMOKE AND MIRRORS" (Book 2 of the Blood & Light Series.)

Rue Volley you really put a whole new look on vampires and how we knew them to be... I loved it! The characters are very well developed and your writing style forms images in the reader's mind as if we are watching a movie as we read. I'm already half way into the 2nd book of the series, Smoke and Mirror's and It's full of all kinds of awesome stuff and things! :) Great job Rue Volley! I highly recommend Blood and Light to reader's, young and old alike.
