Description

It's October in the mountains, and Brian and Holly Jensen are going hunting. Little do they know that they are about to become the prey, in a hunt as old as time. Grab your camping gear and hold on tight! It's time for THE HUNT!

Years ago my husband and I went camping in the high woods of Washington State, at a campground called Swan Lake. The autumn winds stirred the tall pines and snow fell fitfully amongst the red and gold leaves. A million whispers filled the air and stirred the hair on the back of my neck. It wasn't hard to imagine that something ghostly...evil, hid in the shadows. Thus, The Hunt was born.

Brian and Holly Jensen enjoy going to Swan Valley on a hunting vacation every year. Brian hunts and Holly stays at camp reading and relaxing. Roger Atley has been a forest ranger in Swan Valley for a number of years; he enjoys his job and has a good life with his wife and kids. Harley Truefeather is an Indian spirit-walker and Roger's best friend.

Raul Stannard is a full blood vampire, an outcast from his race he and his rag-tag band of followers have been terrorizing humans from Canada down the west coast of America. Raphael Goldhawk is the half-blood king of the High Vampire Council and is responsible for Raul being cast out of their society. Raphael is determined to put an end to Raul's reign of terror, Raul is determined to kill Raphael and once again join the council. Thus, the hunt begins; humans and vampires alike will be tested to their very limits.

Get ready for a power struggle as old as time, good versus evil, a set of cruel circumstances that brings a group of people as different as day and night into the fray, a test of love and friendship and a setting that is as much dangerous and it is beautiful.

This is not your ordinary fluffy, feel good vampire novel. It is dark and dangerous, full of terrifying scenes and just as terrifying evil. From the very first sentence, you are pulled into the action and it does not end until the book does. You are involved in the story, whether you are willing or not, with descriptions that are so real you shiver from the cold of the snow and feel the emotions of the characters. There is enough of the back-story for each player in the story so that you are able to understand exactly why they react as they do.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well written and edited this book was. I started the book while eating my lunch, the very first scene is a little gory, and I actually had to stop eating my lunch it was so vivid. This was not a bad thing, just a testament as to how well written the imagery is. This is a different take on the vampire genre; no beautiful sexy vampires that make you swoon. Instead, there are beautiful creatures that make you shiver.

My only complaint (and what kept this from being five stars) was the fact that we are bounced between characters and time-periods with each chapter. This is not an easy thing to do for even the most seasoned author, and while I give Ms. Jeppsen props for how well she actually did the transitions, it was still a bit confusing at times. I would just be getting into the chapter and the characters, and off we would go to a different one. That one complaint aside, I look forward to what Ms. Jeppsen might have for us in the future. She is definitely an author to look out for. Be aware, there is some slightly graphic violence, but it fits into the story, just don't read while eating. I recommend this book to readers of the vampire genre who want something a little more dark and intense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review: The hunt by Linell Jeppsen, July 7, 2011
This review is from: The Hunt (Paperback)
This book was a real page turner.I love the way the author tells the stories of all the sets of characters and then intertwines them together. You get a reall feel of the characters and a real understanding of all sides of the story. This story is unique and captivating.Although I do want to note that I thought that the book may be to gory for me by the very descriptive first 2 pages ,but after that I completely fell in love with this book and couldn't put it down.I understand that these images were there a much needed insight to the total disreguard for these people from the ones who done it.So I would not change this and am glad that I pushed past it to finish this book that had me hooked from beginning to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Linell Jeppsen's, "The Hunt" is definitely a five star story., June 9, 2011
This review is from: The Hunt (Paperback)
I love fantasy, intrigue, suspense, courage, love and hate, and "The Hunt" has it all. I started it one morning and ended it that same evening. I have to say I put the book down two times because I needed a breather at particularly suspenseful areas in the story. "The Hunt" had me laughing, crying, and sitting on the edge of my seat. Linell Jeppsen definitely has a flair for telling a creative story. I absolutely loved the ending!! Kudos Linell, I look forward to seeing more of your stories in print.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very entertaining read - a review by Jonathon Waterman - author of the Kindle eBook, The Question, May 22, 2011

With the storyline taking place in Washington State, The Hunt provides a very entertaining read. Linell Jeppsen does an expert job at bringing her characters alive - including the vampire, even though this is no way near your run of the mill vampire story. Just ask the spirit walker.

In reading this story, I found that the storyline so engaging, many a time, I found it easy to forget I was reading a novel instead watching movie playing out in my mind. And there is no doubt, if someone was looking for a novel that's extremely hard to set down once you've started, this is the one to get!

My recommmendation - buy it and start reading, or maybe I should say, mentally watching it today!

Excellent reading for those who enjoy fantasy and vampires. Not my personal preference, however, this book is an exception. Once started, I really enjoyed the story and couldn't put it down. The story is very well written and composed to keep the reader involved and wondering what's ahead. I often camp at Swan Lake an will be sure to inspect the area and trees for vampires and be alert during my next visit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Linell Jeppsen's THE HUNT is a modern day struggle with and between vampires. Dare you enter this thrilling adventure?, April 24, 2011
This review is from: The Hunt (Paperback)
THE HUNT is expertly written, filled with beautifully descriptive passages. It now lives in my mind. I know these people. They are not just characters on a page; they are fleshed out, real just like you and me. It is not the usual 'vampire' story. Linell Jeppsen has given us a story of new friends, people you would like to know. (And some that you have to hate.) Primarily, you will meet Brian and his wife, Holly, Roger, a forest ranger and his friend Harley who is a spirit walker and of course exquisitely, handsome Raphael, a modern day vampire. As you learn of their lives you find that they will have something in common. I laughed, loved, cheered, hated and cried. Only an expert story teller can surface so much emotion in a reader. I did not want the book to end and I cried for my friends that have gone on without me. I hope Ms. Jeppsen writes another novel about the people in THE HUNT because to me they still live, somewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, April 17, 2011

I was caught up in this strange and wonderful story immediately, high in the forests of northeastern Washington State, with mysterious deaths at a remote campground. I couldn't put it down. Equal parts history, magic and suspense, THE HUNT is a novel of surprising scope. With a scholar's depth and the deft touch of a great storyteller, Linell Jeppsen has woven a gripping vampire tale of passion and perseverance, bravery and loss. Even so, the vampires are secondary to the resilience of the human spirit in this story. If you want a fast moving vampire story with a little more meat on its bones than the usual, try THE HUNT.
