Interview

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Many people consider me a walking paradox, in that I'm a writer who also happens to be an accountant. The way I see it, though, is that, every day, we all use words and numbers. Luckily for me, I happen to write with both!

Describe your book ‘The Net Present Value of Life’ in 30 words or less.

It's a story about a man who wants to leave a career he can't stand to pursue his passion. It's also an exploration of society's view on money and success.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

As a first-time novelist, finding a publisher was definitely the toughest part.

What books have had the greatest influence on you?

I love reading, and I love almost every book I read. If I were to pick two stand-out books, I'd choose Thoreau's Walden and Daniel Gilbert's Stumbling on Happiness.

Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

While I have done the book-signing and speaking thing, at the moment my focus is on web-based promotion. That means site like bookbuzzr, as well as Twitter and Quora and Tumblr. Of course I also have my own blog at michaeldilauro.ca and website at dilauro.ca

How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

I love music, so you'll often find me playing guitar or listening to jazz and classical music. I also love walking, riding my bike or just spending time with family and good friends.

What are you working on next?

I've got another novel that's slowly coming together. I'm still at the very beginning though, and my characters are still in the development stage. I'm looking forward to the point, as with my last book, the characters take on a life of their own.
