Rena Koontz

An award-winning journalist, Rena Koontz broke into the publishing world in September 2012. The debut of “Love’s Secret Fire” was the realization of a lifelong dream to write books – books that combine romance, suspense and strong female characters designed to mirror today’s women.

All the material was there. Working as a career news reporter at two of the country’s top 20 newspapers provided a writing journey that took Rena into the sports arena, politics, feature writing, editorial writing, and, her favorite, cops and courts. She has chased fire trucks and police cars, covered all sorts of crimes, including murders, and reported criminal, civil, high profile and ordinary trials. Many of the ideas for her books come from real cases she is familiar with.

Plus, being married to a retired FBI agent provides a source for invaluable technical advice. He’s pretty good with the romance parts as well!

Rena has received numerous journalism awards including recognition by the Associated Press for writing excellence.

Her second romantic suspense, “The Devil She Knew,” released in July 2013.

A Pittsburgh native, Rena now makes her home in Florida, having recently relocated from Central Illinois.

“Thief of the Heart” is her third novel.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I've been a journalist all my life with the dream of writing romantic suspense novels. Since I was assigned to the cops and courts beat in two major metropolitan cities, it was easy to take real-life crimes and fictionalize them for my books. And since I'm a romantic at heart, the romance part is a snap.

2. Describe your book Thief of the Heart in 30 words or less.
Based on a real burglary, this romantic suspense captures the terror of being victimized, conveys the comfort of finding safety and protection, and exudes the excitement of new love.

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Finding the right balance between the suspense and the romance.

4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?
I knew I wanted to write good love stories after I read my first romance novel, "The Flame and the Flower." Authors like James Patterson and John Grisham coaxed me into combining suspense with romance.

5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?
Sometimes I do blog tours, although I am not convinced of their value. I have paid for Facebook ads and a few ads in print publications. I am not as aggressive as I should be.

6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?
I enjoy reading and exercising and I have a 10-year-old dog named Jaxson who is blind and needs a lot of my attention.

7. What are you working on next?
I am working on another romantic suspense. All of my novels highlight law enforcement as "the good guys." I think police, fire and special agents deserve our praise and support. In my newest novel, the heroine is a female police officer trying to help her friend, who is a victim of domestic abuse; and solve a series of murders, plus catch the eye of the hunky hero.
