Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

"Most of my career involved being an executive with corporations such as Johnson & Johnson, and an entrepreneur as CEO of two biotech and biomedical companies, as well as the CEO of a media company.  Currently I am the CEO of a strategic development firm, TenorCorp, which has over 800 members now helping start-ups and in-the-market companies.  We also provide success training to leaders in life and business.  TenorCorp's "College & Careers" program helps young people attend college, and provides them with career counseling and coaching.  During about half of my 30+ year career I've developed and facilitated training for thousands of professionals.  Today, I'm leading Pacesetters Inc., which helps individuals achieve their goals and dreams through a systematic approach to developing our four key achievement areas - Planning, Attitude, Communication, and Energy - hence the acronym P.A.C.E.  Our course addresses the intrinsic motivators as well as the success habits that allow people to achieve their aspirations."

2. Describe your book Daily Keys to Success: Essentials for a Thriving Career and Life in 30 words or less.

"My new book is a compendium of snippets arranged by calendar day that detail motivating insights and well-researched lessons to help readers achieve their personal best."

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

"The research and efforts in detailing 366  success keys, fitting each on just one page, was a major undertaking, and quite frankly, it took much more work than I could have ever expected. The topics are all different, and they are all proven because they represent the works of countless studies and experts in various fields - sometimes hundreds of pages are condensed onto just a one-page synopsis.  I did this because most of us are too busy to read the inexhaustible amount of books and papers it would take to thoroughly cover most or all of the knowledge required to succeed.  So, I decided to provide a very easy-to-read approach for learning about the essentials for a thriving life."

4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?

"It's almost impossible for me to name just a few, because I've gleaned so much insight from so many great authors, both fiction and non-fiction.  Max Depree's book, Leadership is an Art, opened new doors for me because it challenged a lot of paradigms about leading as a choice, not a position, which is also what Stephen Covey often said.  I also love the classics, from Browning's works of poetry to Steinbeck's fiction, because they evoke a nuanced view of life."

5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

"I facilitate quite a few seminars and speak at companies and professional organizations, at which I offer my book.  My publicist has also arranged dozens of radio interviews and articles in business and professional publications that showcase DAILY KEYS TO SUCCESS.  I also use social media, especially Facebook and Twitter.  However, most of my sales come from my personal presentations to people."

6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

"As I explained, I lead several efforts as the CEO of two organizations, a speaker, and being involved in charitable organizations as well as training people, so there's not much time for recreation.  I simply enjoy family time with my wife and two teenagers, and our three little dogs.  I also provide spiritual counseling and prayer for patients at my local hospital in San Diego - and, I exercise routinely to keep up my energy for all of these things."

7. What are you working on next?

"My next book will detail the P.A.C.E model we designed for people desiring to achieve their utmost.  I've designed many training programs for companies like Johnson & Johnson, so I've used my 30 plus years of experience to devise what I think is a unique approach for helping people achieve much more than what seems 'feasible.' I start with the four basic drivers for achievement, and then use a systematic approach for maximizing each of these drivers.  I'm really excited about not only the book, but the courses we'll be offering that are based on the program we've designed in the book as well as the DAILY KEYS.  My goal is to redefine success based on each human being's unique talents, passions, journeys, and destinations.  DAILY KEYS TO SUCCESS is a great synopsis for building understanding, and P.A.C.E. will be the roadmap for achieving each person's ultimate best in life."
