Donald Thomas

Dr. Thomas is the Chair of the Medical Scientific and Advisory Council of the Lupus Foundation of America Washington DC/Maryland/Virginia Chapter. He has been an active member of the Advisory Council since 2000 and feels very strongly about educating patients and their loved ones about lupus and how best to combat it. He hopes this work will give some knowledge and help to those who read it, and he hopes to learn as well from comments that he receives from his readers.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?  

I am a rheumatologist (doctor specializing in arthritis and autoimmune disorders). I am in private practice in Greenbelt Maryland and also teach at Walter Reed National Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences where I am an Assistant Professor of Medicine. I have a special interest in the autoimmune disease called systemic lupus erythematosus.


2. Describe your book The Lupus Encyclopedia: A Comprehensive Guide for Patients and Families (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) in 30 words or less.  

It is a comprehensive book that explains all the potential complications and treatments for systemic lupus while giving patients practical information that they can use to help control their disease.


3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?   

The many hours of research and writing in all my spare time outside of my medical practice, followed by the many hours of editing.


4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?  

Dubois' Lupus Erythematosus


5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?  

I have been the number 1 ranked book for lupus and rheumatology books on Amazon since my book was published in late May. I have an active Facebook page where I post daily topics about lupus. I also post topics on Pinterest and Google+ as well.


6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?  

Wine collecting, Texas Holdem, and caring for my two dogs, cat and African Grey parrot


7. What are you working on next?  

Already working on the revision (planned to come out in approximately 3 years) in order to update the medical and research information which are constantly changing.
