David Cole

I am a seeker of spiritual truth, with an open heart and open mind with roots in the Christ tradition, seeing things through hebraic, celtic and mystic eyes.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I live on the edge of the New Forest national park in southern England, which is 150 square miles of woodland and heathland with wild ponies, donkeys, deer, cattle and boar wandering about. I live there with my wife and two young children. I have walked a Christ centred spiritual path now for almost 20 years, but it is not much like that which you find in 'mainstream' church.

2. Describe your book 'The Mystic Path of Meditation: Beginning a Christ-Centered Journey' in 30 words or less.

It's an introduction to Christ centred meditation, but with things in it for those further down the path too. It has been described to me as 'a wonderful life companion'.

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

The hardest part, I would say, was trying to put down into words on a page that which can really only be truly experienced through practice. This book began life as a training day I wrote and ran on Christian meditation which had numerous times of practical application.

4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?

This is quite a hard question to answer as I read all the time and different books have had great influence on me at different stages along my life's journey. But if I were to list some at this point, in no particular order, other than how they come to mind I would say:
'The Big Book of Christian Mysticism' Carl McColman
'Exploring Celtic Spirituality' Ray Simpson
'Behold the Man' Dwight A Pryor
'Celebration of Discipline' Richard Foster
'The Miracle of Mindfulness' Thich Nhat Hanh
'The Naked Now' Richard Rohr
'Awareness' Anthony deMello
'New Seeds of Contemplation' Thomas Merton

I am sure there are many others, but that will do for now.

5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

I have run, and have booked in the future, numerous retreats and quiet days based on the book; it was available in numerous festival book shops over the summer, such as Greenbelt in England; I have a presence on goodreads.com and spiritualnetworks.com; there is an active Facebook page:
and Twitter account: @MysticPathOfMed ; and an active blog site: http://mysticpath.anamcharabooks.com/
The book has been mentioned in the Anamchara books monthly e-newsletters; and Anamchara Books are preparing to launch Google Ad and Facebook Ad campaigns; as well as an ad for the book in the back of our other Anamchara Books publications

6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

I work for The Community of Aidan and Hilda, a globally dispersed Celtic Christian community (www.aidanandhilda.org). I am 'Explorer Guide' for the members of the community, which means I help and guide members in developing their 'Way of Life' and give spiritual direction.
I am a retreat leader and specialise in Celtic Christian spirituality and Christ centred meditation. I also run regular local events designed to enable folk to engage in the message of the Judaic/Christian faith outside of mainstream church. And as I mentioned above, I have a family.

7. What are you working on next?

Well, the companion to 'The Mystic Path' - 'The Inner Journey' - comes out around November 2013, but just now I am working on two books, a 'Visio Divina' book for contemplation and meditation on pictures; and a teaching book which expands on three perspectives of a Christ centred spirituality which have been the most influential in my own walk in recent years but seem to have been mostly lost in modern church, and looking at their similarities. The three perspectives are: the Hebraic, the Celtic and the Mystic.
