Interview

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm a single mother of three children, born in the beautiful city of Cape Town South Africa.  I studied teaching and have taught in international schools in ten different countries, so my children are global citizens, each one with a different accent.  Currently, I'm teaching in Tanzania at the foot of Kilimanjaro.  I started writing when I was living in New Zealand after a bout with breast cancer; it motivated me to follow my dream and do something I'd always wanted to do from a young age - write a book.  Ideally, I'd like to write full time, live in a cottage by the sea and play lawn bowls every Wednesday.  However, children are costly items and until they've finished school and university, I have to continue teaching.

Describe your book ‘The Case of Billy B’ in 30 words or less.

Billy B was inspired by a story a friend told me and the events in the book actually happened.  A single father forced to raise his son encounters unthinkable difficulties.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

The hardest part was that it was set in the US and I've never been there, so that was a challenge.

What books have had the greatest influence on you?

It's hard to say as I've always been an avid reader.  I've read all kinds of books and generally like ones that say what they need to say and aren't too flowery.  I hate books where they spend two pages describing the crack in the wall next to the door.  Just get on with the story, I want to be entertained.

Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

I use Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin the usual; have a website, a blog and use Freado.  I also write for Hubpages.com and have quite a following there.

How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

Traveling.  I love to travel and explore new places.

What are you working on next?

I'm busy with two books at the moment.  A self-help with a liberal dash of humour called How to say no to sex and other survival tips for the suddenly single and Redesigning yourself for the multitasking generation - a book I'm co-writing with world-renowned homeopath, Jeremy Sherr.
