Interview

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My home is in Toronto, Canada but since my husband retired five years ago we spend winters in Florida. I'm a mom/stepmom to a happily blended family of seven grown "kids" and six grandchildren. I've been telling stories through photography since I received my first Kodak Brownie camera at the age of 6. Skiing, tennis, and golf are a big part of my life and I love to travel. I'm actually in the south of France now until the end of September where I'm writing my next novel as part of the story is set over here.

Describe your book ‘The Bridge Club’ in 30 words or less.

Eight women share friendship for over forty years. Stuff happens. Laughter, tears, and a major crisis that challenges all of their beliefs create a story that stays with you forever

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Writing is a challenging and, in many ways, solitary undertaking. You become completely absorbed in your story and I would say finding a balance between writing and managing the rest of my very busy life was the hardest part. There were times when I simply wanted to lock myself away and not have to think about anything else except my characters and the journey on which they were taking me!

What books have had the greatest influence on you?

There have been many books for many different reasons. However recently I would have to say "On Writing" by Stephen King. This will sound strange as I have never read any of his popular books. That genre doesn't appeal to me. However in writing workshops "On Writing" was recommended over and over again. I read it and fell in love with King. His writing style, attitude, sense of humour and appreciation of life and his craft were all very inspiring and motivating. Whenever I have some time I intend to read his fiction as well.

Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

Since publication of The Bridge Club last September, social media has ruled my life. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Goodreads, the list goes on. I had no involvement in any of that previously so the learning curve has been steep. I've done a number of radio and television interviews as well. It's hard work and very demanding ... and I love it. I'm in the process of listing The Bridge Club on Kindle Direct as well. E-books are certainly cornering a large share of the market. I'm also invited to speak with a lot of book clubs who find The Bridge Club an excellent choice for discussion. Meeting readers is the best thing about being published. Even if it is on Skype!

How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

As I mentioned at the beginning of this interview, I have a large family and we spend a lot of time with each other. That's the most important thing in my life. When I have time I indulge in the sports I enjoy. Travel is a big part of my life and my photography is tied into that.

What are you working on next?

I'm working on my next novel and part of it will be set in the south of France. Since I'm here it would be a shame not to write about it. The story is coming along nicely and I'm very excited about it. Hopefully it will be available by the spring.
