Roy Palmer

Author and Alexander Technique Teacher

I am a teacher of The Alexander Technique and teach sports people how to move in a way that improves performance and reduces the risk of injury.

I've written three books to date on the subject of sports performance and 'The Zone', my latest looking at how golfers can get into the perfect state of mind to play at the peak.

Interview

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I'm a teacher of The Alexander Technique, the world-renown movement
system, and have been interested in playing and watching sports for as long
as I can remember. I started writing around ten years ago and have to date
written three books about the technique for sports people.

Describe your book in 30 words or less.

Golf Sense is a different approach to help golfers play more consistent
golf by getting into the state athletes call The Zone. It's not about
technique, it's about focus.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Getting started. Once I've been able to draw up a plan and determine the
objectives of the book I'm able to start writing. The other hard part I find
is to think of a title. I always assume it will become obvious when I'm
writing but it never happens. I didn't think of 'Golf Sense' until writing
the very last paragraph when suddenly it leapt out of the page.

What books have had the greatest influence on you?

'The Use of The Self' by F.M. Alexander - his journey of self-discovery
is fascinating. Why Die?: The Extraordinary Percy Cerutty 'maker of
Champions' by Graem Sims, a brilliant account of the maverick running coach
who was too far ahead of his time. And 'Lord of The Rings' by JRR Tolkein, I
read it first when I was fourteen and it taught me never to give up :0) Also
enjoyed the films.

Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

I experiment with Twitter, have a website and also sent off copies to
golf magazines, websites and golf bloggers. And of course your site which is
a novel approach to marketing. It's not a strengh I must admit and am always willing to learn and take advice.

How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

I teach The Alexander Technique to athletes, golfers and anyone who is
willing to find out more about their own bodies to their benefit. I love to
run, play with my children, eat out with the family walk the dog and read.

What are you working on next?

I've just started my first novel. I've written short stories in the past
but never tried to get them piublished but I've always wanted to write
fiction. I'm finding it a very different challenge to non-fiction and really
enjoy losing myself in the story and characters. I will attempt to get
published but at the moment I'm just enjoying the process.
